   Grant ,

   I have not read the book just mentioned . My question in there were 12 tribes of Israel and one being the tribe of Judah. So was the covenant made with the whole house of just the tribe of Judah? I would appreciate some further insight .

   Sorry . In Genesis 29-30 it lists the 12 sons/tribes of Jacob. One being the tribe of Judah. in various places in Scripture the term Israel is used. One example of the use of Israel not Judah is in Jeremiah 31 ;1. Where He states I will be the Elohim of all the families of Israel and they shall be my people.
   Sometimes it becomes confusing as who exactly is being addressed. I know that are what some call physical Israel and Spiritual Israel.
   If you have any goo resources that I could use to study this further please let me know .

     Thank you, Peggy, for the clarification. Excellent question! The Bible’s use of the terms ‘Israel’ and ‘Judah’ can be confusing. So here is a simple way to understand their usage. Before Israel was divided into the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom, ‘Judah’ referred to the tribe of Judah, and ‘Israel’ referred to all the people of Israel. But after the nation divided in the days of Jeroboam and Rehoboam (David’s grandsons), the northern kingdom was ruled by Jeroboam, which he called ‘Israel’, and the southern kingdom was ruled by Rehoboam, which he called ‘Judah’. From that point on, ‘Israel’ referred to the north, and ‘Judah’ referred to the south. Thus, in Jeremiah 31:31 God says that He will make a new covenant with “the house of Israel and with the house of Judah”.

     This is important to keep in mind also when reading John’s Gospel. When he uses the word “Jew”, John is actually referring to the “Judeans” who lived in the south and were the legalists of the time.
