2 Timothy 3
Our emphasis in 2 Timothy 3 is “the Last Days.” We begin by refreshing several mentions of the Last Days from the prophets. As we look at evidence for the spirit of the Last Days in our own times, we read the lyrics of a song made popular by Whitney Houston in the 1980’s. Moving on, we take a special look at the Greek word “patience.” Finally, we examine Paul’s touchstone description of the Scriptures as being profitable for teaching, exposure, correction, and training in righteousness.

I appreciate your sentiment about how the New Testament does not replace the Torah, but I’m curious on your opinion regarding the common surface-level orthodox interpretation of verse 16: that ALL Scripture is God-breathed including the Old and New Testament both. I believe that Paul was not referring to his own writings in this instance, but is it possible that his writings are also God-breathed, even if we cannot use 1 Tim. 3:16 to justify it. Put simply, do you believe that the New Testament is inerrant?

Michael, Thank you for the great question. Yes! I do believe that the Apostolic Scriptures are also inspired (“God-breathed”). However, since we must judge [probably a poor word choice] newer revelation in the light of prior revelation, that means the Torah has the greater authority. In other words, whatever comes later (like the Gospels, Paul’s writings, etc.) must be examined in the light of what was given and established previously. This is why I find it rather shocking that some can misread Paul’s writings and think we must do away with the “Old Testament” as a result. We must judge what Paul wrote in light of what God had previously given through Moses; not the other way around. Shawm, Grant
