Matthew 26c

Join Beth Tikkun as we continue our study in Matthew’s gospel. In this study we learn about olive oil production and consider how it pictures Yeshua’s internal and external sufferings in Gethsemane and Calvary. Then we analyze a number of the illegalities of His trial, and finish with a comparison of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial of their Master.

    Hi Grant,
Just catching up with the Matthew studies and as I was listening today one of the congregation mentions how it is illegal for the High Priest to rend his garments. Referring to the High Priestly garments this is true but I think you mentioned that he was probably not wearing these. A few years ago a jewish gentleman challenged the fellowship that we used to attend on this exact point. That the gospel must be false as this could never have taken place so I did a little digging. In Tractate Sanhedrin Chapter 7 it speaks about the rending of garments and when this might be appropriate. Only in the case of when blasphemy is heard, which is the context of Caiaphas rending his garment. So in fact, when some say that Yeshua never claimed Messiahship or other such things, the fact that Caiaphas rends his garment shows that Yeshua did make this claim and in accordance with jewish law Caiaphas rends his garment believing that he has heard blasphemy.
