Nehemiah Chs. 11-12: The Holiness of Walls

An early question in Nehemiah chapters 11-12 is, “Why are 10 tribes almost missing from the list of Jerusalem’s residents?” After exploring this question, we draw out a few gems from the many names listed in these chapters, including an important principle drawn from the name “Zerubabel” about relating to paganism. Other topics include more about “walls” in our lives, the depiction of two “flocks” during the dedication of the walls, and music’s connection to praise.

Grant: Would you be willing to include the quotation from the rabbi that you read at the end of the teaching here in the comments so I can include it with the printed notes? Thank you.

Absolutely! Here it is: “Sometimes, a desire for spirituality motivates our quest for an ego trip. Just as we can deceive ourselves into believing that we are fully alive by over-stimulation, we are deluded into thinking we are serving God by finding superficial ways to fill ourselves with religious fervor. This can deteriorate into self-worship. It is difficult to distinguish between sincere emotion and fake arousal.” (R’ Yitzchak Ginsburgh, The Inner Dimension, pg.20)
