Vayechi 2018-19
We begin our discussion of Torah portion Vayechi by looking at Pharaoh’s one big mistake and drawing a life lesson from it. We then focus on the wonderfully complex pictures revealed in the lives of Ephraim and Manasseh. Lastly, we explore within Jacob’s deathbed blessings for the 12 brothers, drawing lessons for us today from this ancient moment of a father’s last words to his sons.

I’m reading your book, In his own words. In the introduction you tell us that the Gospels contain many occasions of Yeshua citing material in the Talmud.
Could you please tell me what those verses are? I would love to know.

Cheryl, Thank you for reading my book, and also for your question. There is insufficient space here to provide all the verses where Yeshua cites the Talmud (as well as other rabbinic writings), however I will give you a couple of examples and then point you to a book that will provide a more exhaustive list. In Matt.7:6 Yeshua said, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs.” This parallels what the Mishnah (which is the foundational text for the Talmud) states in tractate Avodah Zarah 41d: “All that is consecrated holy and yet has become rendered ritually unclean cannot be redeemed and then fed to the dogs.” In Matt.7:3-5 Yeshua discusses removing the beam from one’s own eye before attempting to remove the splinter from one’s neighbor’s eye. The Talmud (b. Arachin 16b states: “If someone says, ‘Take the splinter out of your eye,’ the other responds, by saying, ‘Take the log out of your own eye.'” Again, there are plenty of other examples, but I highly recommend Brad H. Young’s book “Meet the Rabbis: Rabbinic Thought and the Teachings of Jesus” (Hendrickson Publishers). It is both a very readable and enjoyable book that provides a wealth of background to the teachings of Yeshua. Shalom, Grant
