1 Timothy 6

We come to the final chapter of 1 Timothy. As background for Paul’s admonitions regarding avoiding controversies, we learn in this teaching about the sophists of the ancient world – traveling celebrities who specialized in arguing! We connect the sophists to many modern televangelists. Other topics in this teaching include The Didache, the term “eternal life” (chai olam), and the intersection of time, money, and life. Lastly, we allow the story of a candlemaker and the metaphor of the candle to teach us about how to properly invest our time and resources while we live in this world.
