Yitro-Mishpatim 2018-19
Taking up the two portions of Yitro and Mishpatim, we start this week’s teaching by exploring the 4th of the 10 commandments, the Shabbat, focusing on the Sabbath as a witness of our marriage to the Almighty. We then look at the Torah’s revolutionary commandments given as the very heart of the covenant, including a specific discussion regarding the Torah and slavery. Tackling a second often misunderstood passage, we clarify the ancient understanding of “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth,” finding in them not laws for revenge but laws for responsibility. We finish by looking at helpful alternate translations for a couple of verses in Exodus 23, and we briefly compare the Mosaic covenant to the New Covenant.
